Today I tuned the Taylor Limited Edition Koa to Low D tuning and created this piece using ProTools First at my home studio. The piece made me think of a cowboy riding alone running from his past or chasing his future. Who knows? I hope you enjoy it!!!
Unfinished Business containing seven original jazz piano instrumentals is now available on CDBaby.com and is coming soon to other music downloads like Apple iTunes, Spotify, and Amazon.com! Here’s a description about the project.
I love piano and have long desired to sit down and create some tracks using piano and keyboards. Unfinished Business contains the sum of seven ideas using piano / keyboards.
City Streets has that Jazz / R&B feel to it in my own simple opinion. The groove gives rise to that chill effect. If I close my eyes listening to it I imagine wet city streets at night after a rain. I can see a slight foggy mist coming off the downtown street lights.
On Hold — When I was younger I worked with a group of guys and we often went to lunch together in downtown Baton Rouge. All riding together I would impose my mix tape recordings on them for their review. One of them is a very close friend even now. Pat Gately told me that I made some of the best elevator music. Fast forward all these years later, I still often share my tunes with others to get their feedback. When I sent this one to my oldest daughter she replied ‘that sounds like the music you hear when you are on hold’. I laughed about it and called the tune — On Hold.
Workin’ Toward Something
We are all working toward something even if we say we are not. It may just be getting through the day, or saving for a home. It may be earning that education, or some skill.
Unlike most of the other tracks on this project that were done in more of an improvisation format, this one was more deliberate. I wanted on my own to try and generate that feel of simple Jazz I heard growing up in South Louisiana. I wanted to build a mix containing a simple snare with brushes, a bass, and piano. From that foundation I added some Hammond B3, some other electric suitcase pianos, and some trumpet. I have long admired jazz players from New Orleans to Atlanta. I am not sure what they might think of this piece, but I am happy with the result.
There is a restaurant in the New Orleans’ French Quarter called Tujagues. It’s like 160 years old now. Years ago good friends took my wife and me there. The atmosphere, the food, our friends made for a remarkable memory. I fell in love with the place from visiting only once. Tujagues is a simple peaceful jazz piano track that I could imagine being played ever so slightly in the background ambience that is Tujaque’s Restaurant.
Unfinished Business, the title track…
One day I was home upstairs recording this piano piece. My wife interrupted the first recording, and well after I got back to it, other track takes and improvisational ideas never quite took off. I think in life one has to have a funny sense of humor. I decided to call this one Unfinished Business. It just seemed fitting. I love the beat and piano progressions of this one. I just couldn’t fathom throwing it away. I hope you like it.
Pillow Fight is a rambunctiously fun track with a driving beat and pulsating movement! I think you will get the idea. 🙂
Stayin’ Home is for those Friday nights with the one you love just sitting around taking it easy enjoying one another’s company. Life is short and there are no guarantees of tomorrow. Make the most of your life today.
